St. Joseph’s Home R.C. Primary

About our School

Since its inception, the activities of our school are driven by love. Love for the struggling, chronically ill and even the marginalized.

Our classrooms, hallways and playground are abuzz with the following learners:

  • Chronically ill – cancer(30%), childhood diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, HIV aids(25%)

  • Acute medical conditions such as renal failures and dialysis, heart/lung diseases, tracheostomies, Guillian-Barre syndrome and colostomies.

The learners are being referred to the school by hospitals like Red Cross and Tygerberg.

In 2005 under the leadership of Mrs Wenn, the Western Cape Education Department opened the school for children with specific learning barriers from surrounding schools.

With Mrs De Klerk as principal, classes for cognitively impaired learners were started in 2007 and for the first time in the Western Cape Education Department, a Home School Program for chronically ill learners was started in 2011.   This is done under the leadership of the current principal Mrs Paulse and designed by teachers and therapists of the school.

A bursary fund to enable orphans and the needy to pay for their secondary education was founded by Mrs Paulse in 2004. Twelve couples are currently contributing to the fund.

Our therapists and teachers prepare the learners for the workplace and schools of skills in a holistic and inclusive approach. Amongst our special learners we have learners with Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Cochlear Implants and Hearing Impairment.

At our school the staff members are commited to prove the validity of White Paper Six which states: ALL LEARNERS CAN LEARN.
