Strengthening Commitment to Safe School Communities.
The Catholic Schools Office recently hosted two safeguarding formation workshops for Designated Child Safeguarding Officers (DCSO's) from schools across the Archdiocese, reaffirming our shared commitment to the protection, dignity, and wellbeing of every child and vulnerable person entrusted to our care.
The first workshop took place on 30 May 2026 in George, bringing together representatives from our Southern Cape schools. This was followed by a second workshop on 1 June 2026 in Rondebosch, attended by Designated Child Safeguarding Officers from schools in the Cape Town region.
We were privileged to welcome Haley Walker once again as facilitator for both sessions. Through her expertise, practical guidance, and deep passion for safeguarding, Haley provided participants with valuable opportunities for ongoing formation, reflection, and professional development. The workshops encouraged meaningful discussion and strengthened the capacity of our safeguarding officers to respond effectively and compassionately within their school communities.
Safeguarding is not merely a compliance requirement within Catholic education; it is a fundamental expression of our Catholic ethos. Rooted in the Gospel and the inherent dignity of every human person, our schools strive to create environments where children, young people, and vulnerable persons are respected, protected, and empowered to flourish.
The role of the Designated Child Safeguarding Officer is therefore vital in ensuring that our schools remain places of safety, trust, and care. Through ongoing training and collaboration, these dedicated staff members help foster a culture in which safeguarding is understood as the responsibility of the entire school community.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Haley Walker for her continued accompaniment, leadership, and generosity in sharing her knowledge and experience. We also thank all the Designated Child Safeguarding Officers who attended the workshops and represented their schools with such commitment and professionalism.
Together, we continue to strengthen a culture of safeguarding across our Catholic schools, ensuring that the dignity and wellbeing of every person remain at the heart of all that we do.
